The introduction of secure number plates in Guateng South Africa has had to be postponed until 2009 due to the enormity of the task. They were supposed to come into force in January 2008 but it soon became apparent this was not going to be achieved. The government want to create records of every number plate ever made from manufatcurer to end user to ensure that the number plates cannot be cloned and used on the wrong vehicle for criminal purposes.
