Since 1903 motor cars in England have been required to display their registration number on the front and back of the vehicle. The first plates were made out of sheet metal and the digits were pressed into the metal , the plate background was painted black so the digits stood out and could be read. Later there was the option of having plastic raised digits , still on a metal background. Since 1974 number plates have been made from plastic or acrylic whereby the black digits are sandwiched between a reflective and clear acrylic giving both strength and reflectivity.
